Frequently asked Questions for Little League

What ages can play Little League?

  • We can accommodate kids ages 4 through 18.

What is the league age of my child?

  • Baseball age is determined by the age of your child on April 1st.
  • Softball age is determined by the age of your child on January 1st.

How many games?

  • The number of games is determined by level of play (t-ball and AA generally play 10 or more games; whereas, AAA and above will play 20+ games).

When do practices and games begin?

  • Practices will generally start the week following spring break; however, some coaches may choose to begin practice earlier.
  • Frequency of practices is dependent upon the coach, but  you can expect a commitment of 3-4 times per week.

Where are practices and games?

  • Each team is allocated a school in Keizer for practices.
  • Games will be played at the Keizer Little League Complex and/or local schools.

Who do you play?

  • We inter-league with other Little League District 7 teams such as Pioneer, Mt. Angel, and other Salem area Little Leagues.  Generally we have 12 - 15 teams in each of our divisions.

What about travel?

  • T-ball - does not inter-league and as such, all t-ball games will be held in Keizer.
  • AA  - may have a few games in Mt. Angel, but most games will be in Keizer
  • AAA and Majors - Travel is primarily restricted to the North Salem area and Mt. Angel.  In the past we have played games outside of the Salem area, but we keep travel to a minimum.
  • Juniors and above - some travel within the Salem area should be expected

What is provided?

  • Little League will provide the jersey and hat as well as general equipment (helmets, bats, balls, catchers gear, etc.)
  • Glove, cleats, batting gloves, pants, socks, etc. will not be provided by the league.

What if my child wants to play in a competitive league?

  • Little League is a competitive league and as such, we do our best to match each kid to the appropriate level based on age, skill, and desired level of play.  Therefore, we are able to accommodate all kids regardless of age and/or skill level.
  • Our main focus is providing a fun and safe environment for the youth of Keizer so they can develop a love for the game

What about All-Stars?

  • Keizer Little League can field up to six All-Star teams for kids ages 9 - 12 (three baseball and three softball).
  • Boys and Girls ages 11 - 12 are eligible (upon qualification) to play in the International Little League World Series
  • We also offer All-Stars opportunities for boys and girls playing Juniors and above.

How long is the season?

  • The regular season runs April 1st thru mid June.
  • All-stars selection begins immediately following the regular season and the tournaments will run through mid-to-late July (and possibly longer depending on how deep into the tournaments you get).

Does Little League require parents to volunteer?

  • Although volunteerism has always been a huge part of the Keizer Little League culture, we understand that volunteering is not possible for some individuals and as such, volunteering is not mandatory.  Furthermore, we never charge our families for "opting" out of the opportunity to be a volunteer.

Does Little League offer a High School Rules option for youth ages 9 - 12?

  • Yes, and no...Little League offers boys ages 11 - 13 to participate in the 50/70 program, which mimics high school rules baseball - with the exception of certain Little League safety rules (primarily related to mandatory playing time and pitch count rules).
  • Leading off, etc. is allowed during all 50/70 games.

What is the 50/70 program?

  • The 50/70 program allows boys ages 11-13 the opportunity to play on the larger diamond and to play a style of baseball that is very similar to high school rules baseball.
  • Additionally, Little Leaguers who participate in the 50/70 program are allowed to play in non-Little League games, which opens the door to tournament play following the regular season.

What about umpires?

  • Keizer Little League provides trained umpires (home plate umpires) for each of our games beginning at AAA and above.

Are there any additional fees or costs?

  • We do not charge additional fees for umpires
  • We do not charge any fees in-lieu of volunteering
  • Little League is a non-profit entity and as such all umpire, field fees, and uniform costs are built into the one-time registration fee...Thank you to all of our sponsors, who help keep the costs down for Little League participants.
  • You will, however, need to plan on paying for pants, cleats, gloves, socks, belts, athletic supporters, etc.
  • If your son or daughter is selected to an All-Star team you will be asked to pay an additional fee, which covers the uniform, banners, tournament entry fee, etc.
